Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine presents draft laws on extension of martial law and mobilisation to the Parliament

Today, 8 May, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Lytvynenko presented two draft laws to the Parliament that would extend martial law and mobilisation in Ukraine for 90 days.

The draft Law of Ukraine ‘On Approval of the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On Extension of the Martial Law in Ukraine” was drafted in accordance with paragraph 20 of part one of Article 106 of the Constitution of Ukraine and Article 5 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Legal Regime of Martial Law”.

It envisages the approval of the Decree of the President of Ukraine ‘On Extension of the Martial Law in Ukraine’ from 5.30 a.m. on 14 May 2024 for 90 days, until 11 August.

According to the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, the matter of extending the martial law was considered at a meeting of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine at the initiative of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi in agreement with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Another draft law ‘On Approval of the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On Extension of the Term of General Mobilisation” envisages a 90-day extension of the general mobilisation period from 14 May, too.

At the same time, in the context of russia's full-scale war against our country, there is a need to continue mobilisation measures, which will help to increase the country's defence capability and create conditions for the development of potential success in combat operations by military units of the defence forces, and enable the formation of reserves of the defence forces and further rotation of combat units.

The National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine proposed to the President of Ukraine to extend the period of general mobilisation from 14 May for 90 days, and the relevant draft law ‘On Approval of the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On Extension of the Period of General Mobilisation” was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The people's deputies of Ukraine approved both decrees of the President.
